my commitment
a note on the decision to use Ghost and to charge for my work
for years people have told me about how they felt about my writing, photography, and the combination of those two things. i never knew what to do with that, as i don't identify as an author, and so it just kinda lingered, elusively, peripherally. in 2020, no surprise, but really the impetus to start my own website for my writing and photography, was the disgust i felt with social media and frankly the multitudes of it all, from profit to algorithms to cancel culture and every single thing in between. i was so disinterested in feeding the feed. being part of that structure meant not only did they benefit, but i fed it and was complicit by participating. i would rather have fewer eyes on my work and on my own site than continue to actively participate to the degree i had in the past.
the other thing everyone has wanted me to do, and i wanted to do as well, was start a podcast. it had different concepts-ISH, but in 2022, i put words to this "thing" and anything but linear was born, addressing these ideas that have long fascinated me: the decisions that change our lives, how much happens to lead up to that, and how people manage through that.
fast forward to 2023, a major life transformation (again!), and i found myself coming back to anything but linear, for god's sake... i was living it!
i researched, like crazy (i love researching). i made some decisions about a platform that wasn't exactly what i wanted. i revisited my Substack titles and was about ready to commit, when i also recalled reading about Ghost. this is because...how could i possibly just do the "thing" one more time, and be part of "that"? i wasn't super interested in giving 10% of my revenue to the engine and supporting the very thing i was trying to get away from.
i slid over to Ghost and was like, ya know what. yes. independent.
so, know, you are supporting me by subscribing. not me and Substack in a 90/10 relationship.
this is why your support means the world to me.
